Compound event example

NOTE: Although an uncommon occurrence, it is possible that identical event categories will need to be selected in a compound linked event coding. This exception will most likely result from Assassination events. In almost all other instances, however, the presence of a compound verb will necessitate two separate codings to two distinct event categories.

NOTE 2: Reciprocal and complementary linked events require the coder to reverse the positions of the source and target in the second event coding. However, coder must not reverse the positions of the source and target in the second event coding of a compound event. This is because compound linked event categories do not share the reciprocal or complementary association of certain other linked event types.

Single source and single target compound event example

This example sentence codes to the event categories, Shooting and Human death.

Original sentence: Gunmen opening fire from a BMW car shot and killed a Russian businessman in a central Moscow street on Monday, the third deadly attack on top business executives in a week.

Code the initial event to the event category, Shooting. Gunmen are the sources of this event and the Russian businessman is the target (the one who was shot) in the shooting event. Code the compound event to the event category, Human death. The source, gunmen, are the cause of the death. The target, a Russian businessman, is the recipient of the death event.
